Citizens learn principles of GWW and how to monitor and evaluate physical, chemical and biological features of water. Workshops are offered free of charge and carry Continuing Education Units (CEUs) with Auburn University. Visit Workshop Registration to view upcoming workshops, and to register.

Water Chemistry MonitoringChemkitBIG

For testing physical and chemical characteristics of water to determine pollution sources and long-term   trends in water quality. Six variables are measured with a customized test kit and results can be compared with water quality standards that define conditions for healthy waterbodies.

Bacteriological Monitoring

For detecting levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and other coliform bacteria in water, as indicators of BactBIGcontamination. Monitors are trained in bacteriological sampling (site selection, plating, incubation techniques and bacterial counts) and water quality standards.

Stream Biomonitoring

For assessing macroinvertebrate communities in streams (aquatic insects, snails, worms, etc.) as water pollution indicators. Training combines the use of an environmental game that simulates a stream bioassessment, with the field collection of macroinvertebrates to calculate a biotic index of stream BIOquality.

GWW monitors are required to attend a monitoring recertification session about a year after the original certification; and then every two years if they remain active (monitor at least nine months per year). During these sessions, monitors are updated and evaluated on water testing techniques. Recertification session are conducted by an GWW Trainer and each monitor is observed to review techniques and questions are answered as they perform each test.

Alternative Internet-based or mailed exercises are also offered for experienced monitors to complete recertification. Some monitors may attend a full certification workshop to complete their recertification and stay updated in sampling techniques. Monitors who enter and access GWW data online can review their certification status when they log on the website. To maintain data credibility and data entry privileges, please keep your certifications current.
